"The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdeline early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre."
Mary Magdeline qualifies as a Pillar of the Church because she was consistent in her devotion to The Lord, up to the point of His Death and beyond, to His Resurrection. This woman was a true Disciple of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. She has recently been much maligned by the spurius claims of such film/books as 'The Davinci code' a Holywood Blockbuster, with top box office names in the cast, by the way. Actually the plot is a variation on an old Gnostic theme which questioned The Humanity as well as the Deity of Jesus. It is simply untrue and quite absurd to suggest that Jesus married, let alone this lady in question. All the most reliable evidence points to the simple fact that she was one of Jesus followers, but did not have an intimate relationship with Him.When she first met The Lord she was steeped in a life of sin and was delivered of several demons. After this experience, she was a different woman who only sought a life of holiness, purity and spiritual growth, by following Christ as His disciple. It is quite probable that she turned her back on her former way of existence, along with whatever remuneration accompanied it. Instead, she 'took up her cross' and followed The Lord, living by faith. Attractive? undoubtedly ! But the greater attractiveness was her committment to God.
We can all learn something from this woman who knew that the cost to become a true Disciple was Great...but that the 'world' had nothing to offer in comparison to Christ.
May The Lord Bless you.
